The Story Behind Ceyluvial

The inspiration for our business name comes from gem mining and the exquisite Ceylon sapphires.

The business name CEYLUVIAL is formed from two fundamental concepts: the first being the process of gem mining in Sri Lanka, which usually involves extracting gem-bearing gravel from ALLUVIAL deposits, followed by a washing procedure to separate the gemstones from the surrounding sediment; the second concept relates to the root origin of CEYLON Sapphires.

Then we combine the two words CEYLON and ALLUVIAL to form CEYLUVIAL.

Our Operations

We procure high-quality sapphire stones directly from miners and offer them at competitive prices, ensuring that all gemstones undergo thorough inspection and certification for quality prior to reaching consumers.

Essential Steps to Accomplish This Objective

01 — Collaboration with Mines

02 — Ethical Mining Practices

Identify mines recognized for their ethical mining practices, commitment to environmental responsibility, and excellence in sapphire production.

03 — Direct Connections with Miners

Establish direct connections with miners to foster trust and transparency throughout the sourcing process.

04 — Conduct On-Site Evaluations

Regularly assess mining techniques, labor conditions, and quality control measures at the mines.

Strategies to Empower Small‑Scale Sapphire Miners

In the context of sapphire mining, it is a frequent challenge that miners receive lower prices for their output, while middlemen in the supply chain gain a disproportionately larger share. We contend that this culture must come to an end.

At CEYLUVIAL, we have devised strategies to empower artisanal and small-scale (ASM) miners to access competitive markets without the involvement of middlemen. To facilitate ASM miners in getting their products to more competitive markets and to lessen their dependence on intermediaries, several crucial strategies can be implemented.

In order to assist small-scale miners (ASM) in reaching more competitive markets in North America, establishing direct links between small miners and North American fine jewelers and designers, including via online platforms, can diminish dependence on intermediaries and enhance transaction transparency.

Our Mining Methods

Open pit gemstone mining excavation site in Sri Lanka

Open Pit Mining

Open pit mining is a method of extracting minerals or gemstones from large, open excavations made at the Earth's surface. It involves removing layers of soil and rock to reach the valuable deposits beneath.

Heavy machinery - excavators and loaders used in modern gem mining

Heavy Machinery Mining

Heavy machinery mining uses equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, loaders, and trucks to remove soil, rock, and mineral-bearing materials. It allows large-scale mining operations to be carried out efficiently and quickly.

Gem mining in paddy rice fields of Sri Lanka

Paddy Field Mining

Paddy field mining involves extracting minerals or gemstones from areas used for rice cultivation. The process requires careful removal of soil and later restoration of the land to minimize impacts on agricultural activities.

Gemstone mining and extraction from riverbeds and riverbanks

River Mining

River mining involves the extraction of minerals or gemstones from riverbeds, riverbanks, and flowing-water areas. This method focuses on recovering gem-bearing materials naturally carried and deposited by water over time.

How we safeguard the land

Through sustainable mining practices, land restoration and stronger regulation, we protect Sri Lanka's gemstone heritage and its natural environment for generations to come.

By empowering local communities to steward the land, every CEYLUVIAL gemstone carries a legacy of responsibility — mined gently, restored fully.

Our Company

CEYLUVIAL is a company based in the US, with origins in Sri Lanka, and we have been involved in the gemstone industry for many years. Initially, we sourced gemstones from small miners, primarily located in rural Sri Lanka. Subsequently, we broadened our reach to include artisanal small miners from various regions of the island. Currently, we source from over 500 small-scale miners throughout Sri Lanka. The real stakeholders of Ceyluvial are the small-scale rural miners. When you purchase a colored stone from us, they receive a fair share for their diligent mining efforts.

Our focus is on the precision of cutting and color matching calibrated sizes, especially in the realm of round brilliant cuts. We supply color-matched pairs of earrings that feature sapphires as well as semi-precious stones. In addition to calibrated stones, we are engaged in faceting different colored stones that are over one carat.
